The monodrama for baritone based on the story of the same name by Gogol was written more than half a century ago (1963). At that time, it caused a serious public outcry: there was no place for “madmen” in the USSR. Despite the bans, “Notes” were often performed on the concert stage. The symphonic premiere took place thanks to the efforts of the outstanding conductor Kirill Kondrashin, who included the work in his permanent repertoire. The opera is regularly performed in concert in various cities of Russia, but the performance of the Chamber Musical Theater is the first theatrical production of the work by Y. Butsko, one of the most “Russian”, extraordinary and interesting composers of Russia of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
