It is both a suite and a composition in the concerto grosso genre.
In addition to the waltz as such, this work contains various dance genres, such as mazurka, gavotte, polka, minuet, but the semantic culmination of the entire cycle is Anna's great Waltz "Ball in the Karenins' House".
The concert "Invitation to the Waltz" uses musical ideas that initially arose when working on scores intended for theatrical productions, but here they receive a different light and always a broader development: the composer transforms it, gives them a new bright color, a lively and warm materiality, without hiding his admiration for the chosen material. The musical texture is abundantly filled with virtuoso fragments on the edge of performing capabilities and can rightfully be considered an "exam" of the performers' professionalism.
The entire cycle “Invitations to the Waltz” can be presented as a “Big Partita” – a genre that Yuri Butsko has been developing throughout his entire creative career.
The musical material of this composition closely echoes the traditions of Russian waltzes, with the music of contemporaries: one can hear echoes of the ideas of Gavrilin, Sviridov, Shostakovich. Humorous episodes, so rarely encountered in Butsko's work, shade a certain nostalgic note.
