The score contains the author's note: "A one-part, abridged version of a previously written work"; there are also two versions of the symphony - a full version and abridged (by 20 minutes, which, given the long duration, is of significant importance for performers).
In a sense, the Seventh is the coda of the cycle of "large symphonies"; in addition, it has a program, although not prescribed by the author, but quite obvious. The composition is based on the music for the film "Mashenka" based on the story by Vladimir Nabokov, and the plot movement is clearly perceived in the score, additionally emphasized by the remarks in the text (such as: "First meeting", "Letter", etc.). Nevertheless, there is no division into parts here - the music is perceived as a single canvas, with continuous developing themes. The predominant one among them is the varied waltz theme, a symbol of love, melancholy, insurmountable obstacles and the final separation of the heroes of the story.
