"The content of the oratorio, its form and dramaturgy are in many ways reminiscent of a well-known Western genre of ritual music, namely, passion. By analogy with it, "The Tale of the Pugachev Rebellion" is a kind of apocryphal story about a rebel-ascetic who took upon himself the torment for the suffering of the people. The counterpoint of two different texts, a series of episodes sung (by soloists and choirs - to folk texts), interspersed with stories of the reader (excerpts from Pushkin's "History of the Pugachev Rebellion"), the episode of the execution as the main semantic "convergence point", numerous lamentations ("laments") and jubilations ("hallelujah"), as well as characteristic organ introductions - all this undoubtedly emphasizes the " passionate " associations in this work."
