Soloist – M. Khomitser

The Cello Concerto by Y. Butsko is an unusual and undoubtedly interesting composition in many ways, since it represents a unique example of acute psychologism in the genre of an instrumental concerto. It is impossible to “retell” this music because of its extreme variability, multifacetedness, horizontal and vertical mosaic of emotions and states. In an effort to express the complexity and contradictory nature of the psyche of his “hero” with maximalist directness, the composer refuses any extended, internally homogeneous episodes…

An important feature of the composition is the "advantage" of its solo part... In Butsko's work, the cello can allow itself to speak naturally, without overstraining the "vocal cords", and at the same time it is heard all the time. This is not so much the result of "cutting down" the brass group to two trumpets and two French horns, but rather a consequence of the same polyphonic nature of the concerto, whose fabric is carefully cleared of textural "tinsel" that distracts from the main thing.
