One-part

The First Piano Trio by Yuri Butsko continues the period of "Big Sonatas" in the composer's work. The author develops a type of large one-part chamber composition in the spirit of a symphonic poem on an epic-dramatic plot. In the period from 1974 to 1986, Butsko created two violin sonatas, a viola sonata, a cello sonata, two sonatas for two pianos and the first piano trio in this genre.

In form, these compositions represent a further development of the partita genre, with which Yuri Butsko began his career in chamber music.

The first piano trio was written in 1975, during the composer's period of greatest creative activity, at which time Butsko worked a lot in cinema, in the theater, and the musical themes of this trio echo the music of the ballet "Insight", the music of the film epic "Walking in Calvary". The author does not give a poetic name to this trio, but allusions to the "Horsemen of the Apocalypse" are quite clearly traced in it, bell ringing is heard in the scherzo, and the leading theme of the musical development is a quotation from the znamenny chant "Izhekheruvimy".

The ending of this composition is rather pessimistic, echoing the ending of Arthur Honegger's "Christmas Oratorio", where the cinematic effect of melting is also used by removing the viewer or listener from the object. In the coda, there is an immersion into a kind of vacuum, where life turns into a point, silence. And the listener is invited to "light a candle" in his soul.
